Series ARN, a chair with powerful frame and beautiful design is co-designed by a Danish duo, Antonio Scaffidi and Mads K. Johansen. This chair is as strong and stable as it looks. Yet, it is characterized by a slender silhouette, reaching for the sky.Whether something looks well-balanced and beautiful in our eyes, is mainly a question of proportions. A few millimetres may ruin the design.

Four legs, one seat, one backrest – that is all you need to make a chair. Which is probably the reason why they come in a seemingly infinite number of variations and designs. Yet, only very few series succeed in achieving such an exceptionally high level of acceptance shortly after their launch that they can be produced in high numbers for many years. The chair series named 100 (created in 1947).

The designers Antonio Scaffidi and Mads Johansen intently wanted to establish a link to the "first chair" by Kusch+Co. They adopted the same essential design principles of that period during their R&D: simplicity combined with a sophisticated construction of the seat. Their aim was to design a chair that would define and shape the future of seating. Boasting a healthy and ergonomic comfort, impressive in its functionality, excelling in versatility and elegance, sustainable through its construction and materiality, fascinating and unique in its design.

Material and craft:
Wood is unmatched with regard to its material properties, constructional stability, natural surface texture and sustainability. Plastic is more malleable and flexible. It is exactly this amalgamation of both materials that opens up new perspectives for an expressive design language. A third material was aluminum, not only adding to the finishing options, but also to the functionalities. For completeness, the variations featuring the aluminum legs are capable of supporting a weight up to 150 kg.

The seat is always the chair’s heart, in this case also called the chassis. Similar to a car, it acts as the platform and functional element. The chassis is an injection moulded polyamide part. Thanks to the inner, elaborately calculated, corrugated structure, it achieves optimum static stability. Together with the "lid" as seat, the outcome is an intricate, deformationresistant box construction, which at the same time fulfils all the functions of a good chair.

Stackable:
Just like any other good contract chair, series 3600/3650 ARN is stacking as a matter of course, even mixed piles of side chairs and armchairs are possible. When using a dolly featuring a diagonal bearing surface, it is possible to safely transport higher stacks.

Comfort:
The seat slopes gently towards the back, and is designed as a flat surface with intention. As a result, the straight seat does not force the user to adopt a certain posture; this new kind of ergonomics rather gives the complete freedom to sit as one likes. The covering fabric is then stretched tightly over the "lid", so that the fixation is also hidden inside. The chair’s trademark contours remain clearly recognizable.

Adaptability:
3600/3650 ARN is a genuine all-rounder. Ideally suited for use in health care environments, considering its excellent hygienic properties as well as its easy-care and disinfectable surfaces. The variation featuring the aluminum legs, which are made through continuous casting, are even suited for outdoor use. In this context, the gently backwards sloped seat offers an added advantage: rainwater can drain away immediately.

Antonio Scaffidi & Mads K. Johansen

Antonio Scaffidi & Mads K. Johansen is a designers’ duo from Denmark. Both of them graduated from the Danish Design School in Copenhagen.
Whereas Antonio Scaffidi benefits from the symbiosis between his south European temperament and Nordic wisdom, Mads K. Johansen was driven by his artistic passion and experiences as cabinet maker for years.
In their opinion, a good-looking design doesn’t necessarily equal a good product. Good design is the interplay of creative ideas, meticulous planning, careful selection and incorporation of materials, and the inclusion of the manufacturer’s experience and know-how.
